Is the TI-84 Allowed on the SAT, ACT, AP, and IB Exams? (2026 Guide)
Is the TI-84 Allowed on the SAT, ACT, AP, and IB Exams? (2026 Guide)
Short answer: yes — the TI-84 Plus and TI-84 Plus CE are allowed on the SAT, ACT, AP exams, and IB exams. It’s one of the most widely accepted calculators in standardized testing. But each exam has its own fine print, so here’s exactly where you stand in 2026.
The Quick Answer
| Exam | TI-84 Allowed? |
|---|---|
| SAT | Yes |
| ACT | Yes |
| AP (all subjects) | Yes |
| IB Diploma | Yes |
The key detail: it must be the physical calculator. Online emulators and phone apps are for practice only — they are not permitted in any exam room.
SAT
The TI-84 Plus CE is fully allowed on the SAT math sections. The SAT bans calculators with computer algebra systems (CAS) — like the TI-89 — but the TI-84 has no CAS, so it’s in the clear. Bring fresh batteries and know that you’ll need to clear… actually no, the SAT doesn’t require memory clearing, but having your calculator in working order is your responsibility.
ACT
Same story: the TI-84 Plus CE is permitted on the ACT math section. The ACT’s prohibited list targets CAS calculators and devices with internet or communication abilities. The TI-84 is none of those. As with the SAT, it’s allowed — just make sure it’s the physical device, not an app.
AP Exams
The TI-84 Plus CE is allowed on every AP exam where calculators are permitted — most famously AP Calculus and AP Statistics, where it’s practically the standard. AP proctors may check that your calculator is an approved model, and for some exams they ask you to clear memory. The TI-84’s statistics menus (normalcdf, invNorm, T-Test, LinReg) are exactly what AP Statistics expects you to know.
IB Diploma
The IB allows the TI-84 Plus CE as well. IB exams require a graphic display calculator, which the TI-84 is. Note that IB has specific rules about clearing memory before exams — your coordinator will tell you the procedure. Practice the reset sequence (2ND → + → 7 → 1 → 2) before test day so it doesn’t rattle you.
What About the Online TI-84 Emulator?
An online TI-84 — like the free emulator on this site — is a fantastic practice tool. The button layout and functions match the physical calculator, so everything you learn transfers directly. But no exam board allows a browser-based calculator in the testing room. Use the online version for homework and study; bring the physical TI-84 on test day.
Test-Day Tips
- Charge or replace batteries the night before. The Plus CE is rechargeable — plug it in.
- Know your key sequences cold: graphing (Y=, ZOOM 6), DISTR menu (2ND → VARS), and STAT TESTS. Fumbling with buttons wastes precious minutes.
- Don’t update the OS the night before. If an update goes wrong, you don’t want to discover it at 8 a.m.
- Bring a backup if you have one — even a cheap scientific calculator beats nothing.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming your phone counts: it doesn’t. No phones, no tablets, no laptops — physical approved calculator only.
- Borrowing an unfamiliar model: a TI-89 or Nspire CAS will be confiscated on the SAT/ACT. If you borrow, borrow another TI-84.
- Ignoring the memory-clear rule: on AP and IB exams, proctors can require a memory reset. Archive anything important beforehand.
