Why Does My TI-84 Show ‘1’ Instead of the Answer?
Why Does My TI-84 Show “1” Instead of the Answer?
You type 2 = 2, press ENTER, and the TI-84 proudly displays 1. You type 3 + 4 =… and get 1 again. Your calculator isn’t broken — when a ti-84 shows 1 instead of answer, it means you accidentally used the comparison equals sign instead of just pressing ENTER. Here’s what’s going on and how to fix it in ten seconds.
What’s Actually Happening
The TI-84 has two different “equals” concepts:
- ENTER — the “give me the answer” key. Type
2+2, press ENTER, get4. - The = from the TEST menu — a comparison operator that asks “are these two things equal?” and answers with
1(true) or0(false).
You get that second one by pressing 2ND → MATH, which opens the TEST menu, where 1: = lives. So when you type 2=2 using the TEST equals sign, the calculator evaluates the statement “is 2 equal to 2?” — true — and returns 1. Type 2=3 and you’ll get 0 (false).
The same thing happens with the other TEST operators: 5>3 returns 1, 2>5 returns 0. The calculator is doing logic, not arithmetic.
The Fix: Just Press ENTER
For normal calculations, never use the TEST menu’s = sign. Simply type your expression and press ENTER:
- Type
2+2, press ENTER →4 - Type
3*7, press ENTER →21 - Type
(5+3)/2, press ENTER →4
That’s it. The TEST equals sign has no place in everyday arithmetic.
When the TEST = Sign Is Actually Useful
The comparison operators aren’t useless — they’re for logic and checking work:
- Checking solutions: type
2(3)+1=7with the TEST = to verify that x=3 satisfies an equation —1means correct. - Graphing inequalities and logic: comparisons are essential in programming and in piecewise-style logic on the calculator.
- Boolean math:
1for true and0for false can be used inside longer expressions.
Just keep them out of plain calculations.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Hunting for an “=” key: the TI-84 keypad has no standalone equals key for arithmetic — ENTER is your equals. If you find yourself digging through menus for “=”, stop.
- Mixing up the two in long expressions: a single TEST operator buried in a long calculation turns the whole thing into a true/false test. If a long computation returns 1 or 0, scan it for a stray TEST symbol.
- Assuming the calculator is broken: this is the most common “my calculator is broken” complaint in classrooms, and it’s always the TEST menu. Now you know.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my TI-84 say 1 when I do math? You used the = sign from the TEST menu (2ND → MATH), which is a comparison operator. It returns 1 for “true.” For arithmetic, just type the expression and press ENTER.
What does 0 mean on the TI-84?
In a comparison, 0 means “false.” For example, 2=3 using the TEST equals sign returns 0 because 2 does not equal 3.
How do I get the equals sign for equations? Press 2ND → MATH to open the TEST menu and select 1: =. Use it for comparisons and logic — not for everyday calculations.
My whole long calculation returned 1. What happened? Somewhere in the expression there’s a comparison operator (from the TEST menu). It turned your arithmetic into a true/false test. Re-type it using only ENTER.
