How to Reset a TI-84 Calculator (All Methods Explained)
Whether you’re selling your calculator, fixing strange behavior, or clearing it before an exam, knowing how to reset your TI-84 properly matters. There are three levels of reset — pick the right one so you don’t delete more than you intended.
The 3 Types of TI-84 Reset
| Reset type | What it clears | What it keeps |
|---|---|---|
| RAM reset | Programs, settings, history | Apps, archived data |
| Archive/all memory | Everything you stored | Pre-installed apps |
| Factory defaults | Settings only | Everything |
Method 1: Reset RAM (Fastest, Safest)
This clears temporary memory — running programs, the entry history, and custom settings — without touching your apps or archived variables.
- Press 2ND, then + (MEM)
- Select 7:Reset
- Select 1:All RAM
- Select 2:Reset and press ENTER
Your calculator restarts with default settings. Apps and anything in Archive stay put.
Method 2: Clear All Memory (Full Wipe)
Use this before selling the calculator or when RAM reset doesn’t fix the problem.
- Press 2ND, then + (MEM)
- Select 7:Reset
- Select 2:All Memory
- Select 2:Reset and press ENTER
Warning: This deletes all programs, lists, matrices, and apps you installed. Back up anything important with TI Connect CE first.
Method 3: Reset Defaults Only
Just want the settings back to normal without deleting anything?
- Press 2ND, then + (MEM)
- Select 7:Reset
- Select 3:Defaults
- Select 2:Reset
This restores mode settings (like Degree/Radian and Real/a+bi) but keeps all your data.
When Should You Reset?
- Before exams: some testing centers require a cleared calculator — a RAM reset is usually enough
- Strange errors: persistent ERR:SYNTAX or ERR:INVALID DIM that won’t go away often clear up after a RAM reset
- Selling/giving away: full memory wipe protects your data
- Sluggish performance: clearing RAM frees memory and speeds things up
What If the Calculator Is Frozen?
If the buttons don’t respond at all, the menu method won’t work. Instead:
- Remove one battery for 5 seconds, then reinsert it
- If still frozen, press and hold 2ND, +, and ON together — this triggers a hard reset
Frequently Asked Questions
Will resetting my TI-84 delete my apps?
A RAM reset (All RAM) keeps apps and archived data. Only “All Memory” reset deletes installed apps — back them up first with TI Connect CE.
How do I reset a TI-84 for the SAT/ACT?
A RAM reset (2ND → + → 7 → 1 → 2) clears programs and history, which is what most testing centers require. Check your test center’s specific rules.
Why is my TI-84 still acting strange after a reset?
Try the full “All Memory” reset. If problems persist, the OS itself may need reinstalling — see our Validating OS fix guide.
Does resetting fix a blank graph?
Sometimes — if a bad setting is the cause. But first try the faster fixes in our graph not showing guide.
